Reboot - Day 9 (but really Day 2)

Yesterday. Yesterday I had juice and fruit for breakfast and a giant spinach, mixed greens, carrot, and avocado salad for lunch with some servings of fruits and veggies in between as snack and long about 4 or 5 I was starving. I was so hungry, I had a headache, it was awful. I needed a revision.

Revision: eat mostly fruits and vegetables but also add a couple of servings of good quality meat.

I am cutting out sugar, wheat/grains and dairy essentially.

So far with that revision it's going a lot better. I kind of have a headache and still really crave sugar but I'm not starving and feel healthy.

I've learned that juicing is expensive too. I may cut it down to a 7 day reboot instead of a 15 but we'll see.

Reboot - Day 8 (the start)

Ok. It's the first day.

First, let's talk about last week. I was supposed to be cutting out sugars and meats and other delicious things. Spoiler alert: I didn't. Uh oh.

But, yesterday we tried to juice some trial juices. We learned things:

1. If you included rinds and peels, your juice is going to taste the most awful. I can't emphasize this enough. Really. Awful.

2. Kale tastes weird.

3. Strawberries have an unexpectedly large amount of juice.

4. You will be scared of your trashcan after a few cleanings of the juicer.

For breakfast this morning, I had (so far) an apple, a banana, and juice.

The juice was made from strawberries, watermelon, honeydew melon, cucumber, spinach, apple, and pear.

So far, the juice fast isn't that bad.

Reboot - Day 5

I just wrote day 5. Uh oh. Day 5 of what? Day 5 of eating less pizza and ice cream and chocolate covered peanuts? If that's the case then I should restart it back to day 0.

This is why I do the juice fast. I do well with black and white rules. "You can only eat and drink fruits and vegetables." I get that. I don't get, "Begin phasing out junk food. Eat less processed foods. By the end of the week, you should've slowly stopped eating sugar." You know when I'm going to stop eating sugar? Sunday, when all I can eat is fruits and vegetables. It'll be good.

Phasing out things from my diet is hard. I went to Henry's and bought all produce. Except for chocolate covered peanuts. Which are delicious. Cheers.

Today starts the transition into eating more fruits and vegetables and less junk. I have started this transition by thinking about eating a salad. Baby steps.

You are going to think I'm crazy but that's ok.

I'm going to do a juice fast.

Stay with me here... (I've included a lot of links so that you can look more into the things I talk briefly about here.)

I watched a documentary called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead in which a man went on a 60 day juice fast where all he ate or drank was juice (not grocery store OJ but juiced plants) and water. He began the juice fast overweight and with an incurable, rare autoimmune disease. He left the juice healthy and cured of his disease.

Now, I don't have an diseases and am not overweight but the goals I have for this is to train my body to crave fruits and vegetables and to eat healthier. I am a picky eater to say the least and try to eat healthy but can't escape a bowl of sugary cereal, or some chicken tenders, or potato chips, or ice cream. God, I love ice cream. I am hoping that I can prove to myself that is it possible to rid your diet of those things and to jumpstart a new, healthier lifestyle.

Let me say that I am not one to ever to a cleanse. You know the ones you hear about where you just drink water with lemon and maple syrup and stuff for way too long? I think those are ridiculous. Your body has evolved to cleanse itself quite well, and eat more fiber. This juice fast is more of a jumpstart, or reboot as it is indeed called, to a new way of thinking and eating. I want to get off crap food please.

I am doing the Reboot Entry Program. Here's the plan:

Day 1-7 : Prepare

Transition off junk food, white flours, sugar, fried food, fast food, processed meats, dairy, alcohol and caffeine. Also, eat less and less meat based proteins so that by the time you start your fast, all of your protein is coming from plants. Transition to eating more fruits and vegetables.

Day 8-22 : Juice fast

Juice fresh produce as well as eat raw or cooked vegetables and fruits.

Day 23+ : Live your life better

Don't eat junk food, eat as many local, organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables as possible. Eat smaller amounts more often. Think about protein in a new way in which is doesn't come solely from meat but mostly from plants.

With all of that said, I should probably just go ahead and eat all of the ice cream and cereal and candy and cookies and pancakes in my house today. No?

A lot has changed in my life in the past 2 weeks.

Last year, I graduated college and a week later I got a job. A crazy job.

I worked like a crazy person with crazy hours for just over a year. Because of those hours, I got a savings account, met friends, and grew an imdb resume.

But now I have to figure out essentially what I want to be when I grow up.

What do I love?

Photography.

I love it. I loved studying photography in school. I love taking photographs. I love printing them. I love editing them. I love looking at them.

I've had her for 2 weeks. I took her to the vet today and she's now 3 lbs (when I got her she was 2 lbs) and she's 10 weeks old.

She's curious and has two settings: full speed or asleep.

Little baby Brekki falls off of every table, chair or bed, stumbles over her legs when she runs too fast, doesn't sleep at night and thinks my hands are toys in the middle of the night.

One time she played a legitimate game of fetch for 20 minutes.

Right now, she is sitting right next to my laptop on my couch watching the mouse move across the screen.

She's real cute. And tiny.

I have my own desk with my two monitors sitting side by side on top. I have my own drawers that hold my post-its, notebooks, pens, paper clips, and snacks. I have my own foot rest for some odd reason under my desk to accomplish the very important task of propping my feet up 4 inches. I have my own chair whose wheels I utilize every time I have to go to someone's desk when I have questions. I have my own plastic sheet on the floor so that my wheels can roll. I have my own mouse and keyboard. I have two gel wrist-cushions in front of both my keyboard and mouse for no other reason than they were accessible and free so I decided I needed them. I have my own preset landscape slide show playing on my desktop instead of the generic windows background. I have huge windows that I share with the other people in the office.

I have my own key card that lets me get onto the super secret floor where my office lives.

A real job.

I got a real job this week. I started on Monday.

For the first week, they are keeping me at 10 hours a day. They are long days but they are busy and everyone is super nice so it isn't too bad.

They have free coffee and tea and other treats. It's this machine and you put in a little bag of what drink you want and then it brews it for you and it's amazing. I love it. I feel like I'm in the future when I use it.

I have no real idea of what I'm doing. I'm trying to learn their software and their jargon.... trying to speak their language. I'll learn.

I went home early today because I thought I was getting a migraine. Instead, it was some weird headache associated with my ear I think. I'm glad I went home.

I get Monday off for 4th of July!!!! Then, I have to start week 2 of working on top secret excel documents.

Working in an office 10 hours a day, no matter how big the windows are, makes me realize that I would really enjoy being a professional photographer where I get to get out and play. I realize though that this office job is the most sensible job for me for the time being. But in the future...

Yesterday during what might have been my last shift at the Gap, I fell in love with a Beagle named Bagel. And it fell in love with me. Every time I would walk away after petting it, it would follow me to the length of the leash and then start crying. It was sweet. The end.

Sarah and I went hiking in the local canyon. Due to previous events, I was extremely cautious of poison oak. Before we went, we studied the guide they put up at the start of the trail to show you maps and also show you what poison oak looks like. They could have just said, "Hey, see that plant you're standing really close to... poison oak. And the one behind that... poison oak. Turn around, do you see the one behind you? Poison oak." So we stuck to big, wide trails and when we came to trees that were too close for comfort, we turned around.

Ocean Beach and such.

On Thursday, we went to Ocean Beach because it was such a beautiful day and some crazy stuff happened. We saw a guy get rescued. We still don't know what really happened, we can only guess. What I do know is that within 10 seconds of the lifeguards yelling over the speakers, there were two jet skis and a boat heading out into the ocean, a police helicopter circling above and policemen on the pier. Then, the lifeguards came back and had a guy on the back of the jet ski and lifted him onto one of those orange people carrying devices you see lifeguards carrying. Whatever happened made him unconscious and naked. Were thinking he got assaulted by a wave or he fell from the pier? I felt really proud of the lifeguards though because of how fast everything happened. It was comforting to know how ready they are to rescue people. There was nothing on the news so I have no updates but I hope he's doing ok.

In other news, we drove to the cliffs and saw the pink house. Rumor has it, during prohibition, the guy who lived there dug a tunnel down to the caves below so sneak alcohol in. This hasn't been confirmed but I think it's awesome. Also, I just want to live in this house. It's a beauty.

Also, I would like caves underneath my house that lead to the ocean.

This morning we went to Mimi's Cafe. I ordered two blueberry muffins. For myself. And a side of fruit.

I realize that they have really great meals like french toast and eggs and bacon and such but I freaking love their muffins so much.

They are my #1 favorite of all time.

I could only eat one so I took the other one home. I am currently using all the self-restraint I can muster in order to not eat it and have it for breakfast tomorrow. So far I've only half succeeded and will have half of a muffin for tomorrow.

The MFA students' work was on exhibition at my school's gallery and one of the TAs, Shane, built this camera obscura. I casually and stealthily took these photos with my blackberry because I wasn't sure if you were allowed to take pictures or not.

The first image is the front, facing outside. The second is the back and you would look inside to see the image. And the third is the image. I don't really know the mechanics of it but the image is projected upside down. I had my friend April stand in front of it because it's easier to see a human figure than just trees.

Isn't that approximately the most awesome thing you've ever seen?

Today Eleadah and I went and got our caps and gowns! We will have forest green tassels.

We also got 30 cent chocolates (the ones that they place at the register to further impulse buying) to celebrate. One of us paid for ours... one of us didn't. It was an accident but I'm pretty sure the massive tuition covers one 30 cent chocolate. If it doesn't, they can keep the degree. Not really.

The Week 10 Plan.

It is the last day of my college/school career until finals. Everyday this week I'm taking my camera to school and taking pictures. Then, I will post them straight out of the camera. Why? Because it's the last week of the quarter and I need to spend my time working on projects and not editing photos.

I watched The Hurt Locker last week and it was very stressful.

It really put into perspective the story about the British sniper who killed two Taliban men from a mile and a half away. Insane crazy. After the first guy was shot and killed, the second guy didn't even hear the gunshot so he just started firing. Then, bam. Unbelievable.

Happy memorial day. To be honest, I don't know how they do it but I'm grateful that they do.

Man on Wire.

I just watched Man on Wire. It was stunning. It's about Philippe Petit who, on August 7, 1974, tight-rope "danced" (as the policeman who waited from him on one side of the rope) between the World Trade Towers. He said that as soon as he saw a picture of what they were projected to look like in a french newspaper, he drew a line across the top of them and thought, "they are being built for me!"

The documentary was suspenseful and oddly emotional. The contrast between Philippe and his partner in crime, Jean-Louis is hilarious. Philippe is incredibly expressive and excited whereas Jean-Louis is fairly quiet, straight-faced and subdued saying things like, "it was the most exciting thing to have happened in my life."

You can feel Philippe's passion for this and his excitement for it. It's nearly tangible. And the fact that they pulled it off is awe inspiring. After he executed it successfully, he was of course arrested. A while later, they gave him a permanent ticket to the observation ticket.

All in all, a really beautiful film that I highly recommend.

We have a neighbor down the alley that we discovered who has birds. Pigeons. A lot of pigeons. We discovered this one day while going to the car and curiously hearing pigeons. Sure enough, down the alley, there was a backyard filled with them. Most of the time I either see them on the power lines or flying around in a circle above the power lines. The people in the house either are breeding carrier pigeons or is the lady from Home Alone. Those are simply the only explanations I can come up with.

Occasionally I go to my sociology class and I learn something. The other day we were learning about happiness and this is what I got out of it.

Some sociologist coined the word "flow" to acknowledge something that causes happiness. The act has to be challenging yet achievable, and requires all of your focus in which you get completely absorbed by the activity and everything else disappears.

Also, an interesting study was done that compared the level of happiness of lottery winners and accident victims. Before the event, they were similar. At the event, the people who was the lottery experienced a spike in happiness whereas the accident victims' happiness level dropped. Months after the event, the accident victims were happier than the lottery winners.

So I don't really know where I'm going with this but I just found it interesting.

In a counter-point to my professor though, he mentioned that watching television isn't part of flow because it isn't challenging. You never had to learn how to watch television and you don't have to practice it. But with that I would like to mention "Lost". Lawyer-ed.

LOST

Step 2: Come home and watch the finale without contacting the outside world in any way until it is over in order to prevent the internet from spoiling everything.

I love that they need two and a half hours to answer all the questions. In the second to last episode when Jacob sat everyone down around the fire to tell them why he picked them and such, I thought, "This isn't going to be the finale, right?" ...Jacob just explaining every little question. Story time.

I watched Paper Heart. The reviews seemed to come to the consensus that "you will either find it irritating or charming." I found it so charming I wanted to slap myself in the face. If you like really awkward people and really awkward situations, you'll love it. I did. It's shot as a documentary with interviews and the like. Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera are so interesting and different that you just want to see more of how they interact with each other or just other people. Good times. I give it a solid A.

I also really like dry humor so that helped.

I watched Brief Interviews with Hideous Men which was adapted and directed by John Kraskinski. Overall, I liked it. It was flashy, I have to admit. He uses some pretty awesome non-linear editing to tell the story and it makes it very intriguing. Also, in one of the reviews someone said that this poor girl is just followed and surrounded by men performing David Foster Wallace monologues and it's true. John Kraskinski's writing is very lyrical and deliberate and not at all how any real human talks. But it sounds nice. "Bracket your judgment." That's a line from the movie and doesn't it just sound nice?

Overall, I give it a solid B+. I'd watch it again. The little bits with Will Forte and Will Arnett are hilarious, as they should be. And Chris Messina is just amazing and I love him. And I'd watch it again to look at the time line which was really clever.

(Also, for some strange reason, I tend to feel really proud of someone when I see their name flash on the screen at the beginning of the closing credits. I just imagine what it would feel like to be sitting in a movie theater after years of working on a story and to see your name up on the huge screen and everyone around you is reading it after they just spent approximately 120 minutes watching something that you made. "See everything that just happened there, I made that!")

And this is one of those endings that gets me every time. You know, that feeling you get after you've seen a great movie and you're sad to see it end. That feeling of empathy when you know exactly what's running through the characters' minds because you know them so well. I love that.

A few times this has happened. I've been roaming the world wide interweb and I find something that I like and I think, "I can do that." Is this plagiarism or a great can-do attitude. I can't quite decide. For Mother's Day, I saw this card and I figured I could do it so I did.

I painted this painting the same way. I actually saw it at Urban Outfitters but it's now long gone.

I vote it's a creative exercise and not plagiarism.

(It is magnificently quick to take a picture with my blackberry and put it here. So convenient!)

Yesterday I bought sidewalk chalk in the dollar section at Target and the beautiful day this morning afforded us the perfect opportunity to break it out.

Of course, it's a fact that we like chalk and chalkboards. This is in our living room:

Sarah decorated our fence and planted some footprints.

We left with a beautiful front yard and chalk all over our hands. I love summer.

I walk by these flowers nearly every time I walk to the parking lot and, let me tell you, they are incredibly fragrant. They smell so lovely that I purposefully walk on that side of the sidewalk. On some occasions, the flowers are behind swarms of bees. Those days I tend to keep my distance.

Also, the eucalyptus trees smell nice.

Only five more weeks.

I just sent in my order for graduation announcements! Every time I mention something having to do with my graduation I freak out a little bit. I am berry berry excited.

In honor of me almost graduating, here are some pictures of UCSD on a fairly cloudy day.
1. The all famous Sun God.
2. The forest between Muir and library walk that I have walked through too many times too late at night.
3. The Ivy on some of the buildings in Muir (it always amazes me how tall it grows).

It's been real. And it still will be real for about 5 more weeks (and it will especially will be real tomorrow morning after 5 hours in the editing lab).

Type in "M. Ward" into Pandora and it's genius. They play all kinds of good stuff including DMB, Iron and Wine, of course M. Ward, Rufus Wainwright, The Frames, Joshua Radin, Sufjan Stevens, some guy named Alexi Murdoch who I've never heard of but has really good songs and a lot of other good stuff.

So back to the original reason why I sat down at the computer... my step outline. Outlining is hard. Ok bye.

One of my favorite moments ever:

In Overboard, when Dean (Kurt Russel) takes Annie (Goldie Hawn) out for her birthday and they are outside and she asks why the boats honk three times and they start playing Elvis's "Fools Rush In." He proceeds tells her the story of Caterina and Arturo. Then, they dance. And Annie says, "Dean? How old am I?" And Dean says, "29." She laughs and they kiss.

It's such a sweet moment. I love Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel.

Also, I will watch Overboard every single time I catch it on TV. I have probably seen it roughly 8,000 times. And it's great every time.

This lovely blog featured another blog that does scrap-booking and I don't really do or like to do scrap-booking but I kind of love this page. I love how the photos is sewn on and the text is printed on the paper and the simplicity. Pretty.

I'm graduating college in approximately 6 weeks and, I'm not going to lie, I feel pretty stressed out about it. I'm nervous about where I'm going to live and who will hire me. But I'm also extremely excited to be nearly finished with college, assuming all goes as planned (I'm talking to you pass/ no pass sociology class). I have to admit though, the nervousness outweighs the excitement a little bit right now.

P.S. This is the photo all of you family members and such will be getting in my announcement. And there may or may not be another one that more closely resembles Groucho Marx.

Also, I'm 100% sure this cat lives in these catcuses because every time I go to Old Town I see him. He's sleepy sleeps.

I'm writing down what I want to do because I want it to happen.

I'm going to graduate college in June.
Take a trip for a week and make a documentary.
During July (I will work, send out my resume, get a job) I will go out every day and take pictures.
Also during July, I will go to Balboa Park every Tuesday so I can get into every museum for free.
Then in August I will move to a city where I have a job and live in a tiny studio apartment and life will be great.

A while back I wanted to date Andy Roddick (and still do) and I told this to my Aunt when my family was visiting Colorado and we were all watching Wimbledon. I just remember my Aunt and I talking about it like it was a possibility (he wasn't married at the time). Like if he were to meet me, he would like me and we could date. This was feasible. Of course this was sarcasm but it was still good times entertaining the idea that that's possible. This is why I love my Aunt. She entertained the idea that if only Andy Roddick were to meet me...

Now let's move on to Joseph Gordon Levitt. He is very handsome.

Sarah and I had a mini day of fun on Sunday. We started it off by watching our friend Zak jump out of a plane. It was insane. It looked great while we were watching them float down serenely to the ground with their colorful parachutes floating but then we looked at the pictures. The photos of them jumping out of the plane with the ground 13,000 feet below them did it for me. I got anxious just looking at the pictures. I could never imagine voluntarily making myself jump out of an airplane. I don't think that's for me.

Then we went to the swap meet where I accidentally got sunburned. We did get a chance to fit in a snow cone and mini donuts though. That's a must.

I just discovered The Buried Life. Their website is here.

It's about four guys who made a list of 100 things they want to do before they die. For every one thing they cross off of their list, they help a stranger cross something of of theirs. It's awesome, heart-warming, hilarious, and entertaining.

"If you had one day to live, what would you do? Would you climb a mountain? Would you kiss the girl of your dreams? Would you tell someone how you really feel? Now, if you had a whole lifetime to live, would you lose that drive or would your list just keep getting longer?"

And I can't help but think about all the moments that just happened magically.

Before the scene where Dustin Hoffman threw the wine glass against the wall, he only told the cameraman he was going to do that to make sure he got the shot. Meryl Streep stayed in character and it was fantastic.

Then there's the end. Meryl Streep thought they had completed the scene so in the elevator she asked Dustin Hoffman is she looked ok, worried that she had smeared her eye makeup during the scene. He said, "You look terrific." And that's the perfect ending.

That's why I love movies.

So I looked out the window and then said cautiously, "Sarahhh.... would you come over here. I'm not sure what my eyes are looking at." She said, "I'm scared. What is it?" She looked at it and said, "That's a snake!" It was a snake. That's what I had seen but I thought I was just losing my mind. Then, it moved using it's legs and we both said, "With legs! It's a lizard!" Here it is. Our porch has 4" wide pieces of wood so the lizard was about a foot long. The body was on one side of the fence and the head on the other side. Gross.
